Thursday 2 September 2004 Armed men seized a school in the Russian city of Beslan, on the border of warring Chechnya. About 400 people were taken hostage, including 200 children. At least two people were killed in the raid, 13 injured. One of the dead was a man who brought his child to the school and was shot when he tried to resist the raiders.
