Curriculum, Assessment and New Media. This week we learned about Virtual Worlds and the notion of them being learning spaces rather than just a form of entertainment. We engaged in activities in Jokaydia. There are two forms of learning that may take place in order for these skills to be developed including undirected , where students show initiative and creativity .
The resources for topic three have, for me, been the most insightful and engaging within the module. Research clearly shows that games are an incredibly useful tool for education. This is something that I advocated for some time now, yet the extent to which games benefit our students has only now been fully revealed to me.
I am not so sure about virtual learning environments. I am reminded of the 19th century, our last revolution, the industrial one. McGonigal proposes that game based learning can incorporate problemsolving, creative thinking, and metacognition, and that therefore the challenge becomes how to use games to further develop these skills.
