The first Maori settlers to New Zealand are believed to have arrived between 1250 AD and 1300 AD. They arrived over a period of several years in a series of voyages from eastern Polynesia made in huge canoes. Centuries of isolation from other cultures came to an end when European explorers discovered New Zealand and encountered the Maori.
