Históricamente findada en 1207 como una villa, no obtuvo el estatus de ciudad hasta 1880, cuando la ciudad comenzó a adquirir una importancia y un volumen considerable gracias a la revolución Industrial. Actualmente hay diversas zonas del centro de la ciudad que han sido declaradas Patrimonio de la Humanidad por la Unesco.
