The current show is the revamped version of the original Top Gear, which started in 1977 as a simple motoring show that covered certain races, and discussed and reviewed new cars. This changed around 1988 when new hosts and producers were brought on board to make the show more comical and entertaining. This was a success as it continued until 2001, when it was decided that it needed an update.
